An open deck is designed for people, furniture, and whatever snow lands on it before it slides through the gaps or melts off. Put a roof over that same deck and you have changed the problem entirely. A solid cover collects and holds snow for long stretches of winter, and it delivers that weight down through a few specific points rather than spreading it across the whole floor the way a deck full of guests does.
Wind is the other half. Anything overhead becomes a surface for the wind to push and lift, and connections that were never asked to resist uplift or racking suddenly are. A solid roof concentrates water along an edge, so gutters, downspout routing, and grading away from the foundation belong in the design rather than in a conversation afterward. A freestanding cover avoids the second attachment entirely and is sometimes the better answer.
